New drum cover: Blink-182 – Stockholm Syndrome

Here I am again with another Travis Barker drum cover. We uploaded this one yesterday, and it got a nice ammount of comments straight away. So thanks for them – seems like people really like to follow the occasional the Blink-covers I do. This one’s Stockholm Syndrome from the self-titled album:

To be honest, this one was filmed at the end of last year. We’ve had quite a bunch of covers awaiting for publishing. This song is one of those filler songs for drum cover filming sessions. Not so tough to learn and nicely short tunes. Stockholm Syndrome has never been among my favorites on the already tough-to-approach Blink-182 album. The mood is a bit sad and gloomy to give me the feeling I want to have from listening to Blink.

The drums, however, are not depressed at all even on this song. The first things that caught my attention drum-wise was the fast hihat beat on the prechorus and the bouncy feeling of the verses. Being one of the newer not so pop punk songs, Travis has his usual pumping bass drum dominating the comps. The bouncy feeling on the first beat comes from the absence of striking the “one” on the count. When counting to four with the straightforward beat you’ll notice that the “one” is not played at all. Instead, there is syncopated fill on the snare and rack tom, that ends on the crash hit right after the count of “one”. Once again it’s hard to put in words what seems pretty obvious while listening to the song.

In order to learn the verse beat (the first beat of the whole song after the snare drum hitting intro), you should at first forget the snare and tom fill, and try to find where the crash cymbal hit lands. The snare drum continues the beat immediately after the crash. In the end you’ll see, that the “one” of the beat is moved forward one 8th note. Nevermind the theory, just listen carefully where the crash hits and try to fit it in the beat. ūüôā

By the way! I just recalled that I’ve done a drum cover in Stockholm. Dunno about the syndrome, but it’s not the most usual cover video:

My favorite part of the song was the bridge starting at 0:48 on the video. It’s one of those cool breakbeat kind of things Travis often does. On these kind of parts the drums really dominate the whole part. The tricky break is followed by the disco type beat with fast closed hihat ticking. These kind of beats really develop the finesse of your hands, since you have to play fast on the hihat with the stick tips, but still hit hard on the snare drum to keep the beat powerful.

Playing this song reminded me much of “Go” from the same album, be sure to watch it if you already haven’t. ūüôā A kind of a filler song with not so tough drums, but nice to play anyway. Today I’m heading to the rehearsal place to practice a couple of harder tracks Travis has done. See you next time.

Siin√§ on just sit√§ kivaa breakbeat-tyylist√§ komppisekoilua mik√§ Traviksen soitossa inspaa kaikista eniten.

T√§ll√§ viikolla uusien rumpucoverien opettelu jatkuu, ty√∂n alla pari haastavampaa Blinkkibiisi√§. ūüôā
